HypnoBirthing®: The Mongan Method
for Easier, Safer, More Comfortable Childbirth
Did you know birth doesn’t have to be painful?
That was the claim that got my attention 16 years ago. I was pregnant with my first child, my daughter, waiting for an appointment with my midwife and perusing flyers on the practice bulletin board.
All I knew about birth up to that moment was how painful and perilous it was supposed to be. Even so, I really wanted a natural birth. It’s why I had chosen to be cared for by midwives. I trusted them with the “peril” part – to get me through it safely – but the pain? I didn’t have a plan for that.
So I took the flyer, called the number, and began my journey with HypnoBirthing®. In class, I learned that pain in childbirth is not universal. It’s cultural, the result of fear – not inherent to birth and not inevitable. Fear causes tension, which causes pain. Furthermore, fear interrupts the flow of the hormones that propel birth, resulting in slower, harder labors. When you manage fear, the birth takes care of itself.
That was the theory, and I’m delighted to tell you that it worked in practice! My experience with both my births was that it only hurt when I fought it. HypnoBirthing® gave me effective tools to stop fighting birth and start working with it, resulting in calm, mostly comfortable, and fairly easy births – both of them without any drugs or other medical interventions.
These births were such profound and positive experiences that I had to teach the method that enabled them! In 2006 I became a HypnoBirthing® Certified Educator and have helped hundreds of mothers have great births with this program.
I’m thrilled now – after living and teaching in London, Tokyo, and Hawaii – to be offering HypnoBirthing® to couples in Omaha, Nebraska, and the surrounding communities.
What You’ll Learn
You’ll learn the Mongan Method, the original hypnosis-for-childbirth program, created by Marie Mongan, which teaches:
- How to eliminate the fear and tension that cause pain in childbirth, so that you can birth comfortably without drugs.
- The deep breathing techniques that give your body and your baby the oxygen you need for a more calm and efficient labor.
- The deep relaxation techniques that keep you calm and release your body’s own powerful analgesia, freeing your birthing muscles to work as nature intended.
- The affirmations and visualizations that bring your mind, body, and baby into harmony for a more joyful and safe birthing.
- How to prepare your body for birthing, including how to avoid artificial induction, artificial “speeding up” of labor, and episiotomy or tearing.
- A more integral, active role for your partner or birthing companion.
What You’ll Get with HypnoBirthing®
Medical research confirms that HypnoBirthing® is associated with:
- Significantly shorter labor;
- Reduced use of medication for pain relief;
- Fewer medical interventions, including fewer surgical births;
- Faster postpartum recovery;
- Significantly reduced occurrence of postpartum depression.
The trust you gain in your body and your instincts will serve you not only in birth but in life!
Allison is a wonderful, gentle, supportive teacher and her hypnobirthing course was absolutely the best way to prepare for my daughter’s birth, completely tranforming my expectations and therefore probably my experience of birth. Before the course I had very negative images and expectations from TV/movies and other women’s horror stories (compounded by my own overactive imagination!). The first time we watched a DVD of hypno-birthing mothers giving birth, I was astounded and inspired. You have to see it to believe it, the calmness, the gentleness, so very different from how it is portrayed in the media. As the course progressed I let go of my fear, began to trust my body and even started to look forward to a natural birth. This was huge progress for a woman who had been threatening to book herself in for a c-section under general anasthaetic! Practising the relaxation/self hypnosis exercises built my confidence and when the day came, it went wonderfully. Alice’s birth in (lovely warm!) water was a beautiful amazing experience and at no point did it even occur to me to ask for pain relief. Of course, it was incredibly intense, but I felt relaxed and confident, and everything went exactly as we had hoped, just as I had been made to visualise during the course! It was a straight forward 5 hour labour. Immediately after the birth, I felt overwhelmed with joy and elation. I didn’t even feel tired.The midwife said it was a ‘textbook delivery’ and we went home 6 hours later. Our baby Alice has always been a calm happy baby and I am sure this is partly due to the lovely gentle birth she had. I wish all women could do this course.” – Gigi, mom of Alice

“After a very traumatic birth of my first child i was convinced birthing shouldn’t have to be so interventionist. I was looking for a way to make birthing feel more natural and empowering, and HypnoBirthing worked for me. When I gave birth the experience exceeded all my expectations, and was one of the most beautiful days of my life!” –Sabina, mother of Santiago, Mariano, and Thalia
FAQ’s
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration—a state of mind and body in which we communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind. This part of our mind influences what we think, how we feel, and the choices we make. It can actually control pain.
There is no magic to achieving success with self-hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus.
What’s it like to be hypnotized? (I’ve only ever seen stage hypnosis, where people seem to do things against their will and don’t remember anything afterwards.)
When having your baby with HypnoBirthing®, what you will experience is similar to being engrossed in a book or staring at a fire. You will be totally relaxed, but fully in control. You will be aware of your body’s contractions, but able to determine the extent to which you feel it. You will experience your birthing in an atmosphere of calm, without the fear and tension that cause pain. Your body’s natural anesthesia will replace the stress hormones that cause pain.
When it is time for your baby to be born, you will be fully awake and involved.
As for stage hypnosis, the entertainers who do it know how to recognize willing participants. The mind must be willing to follow the suggestions of the hypnotist – whether that’s you, yourself, during your birth or a hypnotist during a stage performance – or it won’t work. Trust and willingness are everything.
Is hypnosis mind control?
In a way, yes – hypnosis helps you to control your own mind!
The stories our culture tells about birth and the way we talk about it hypnotize us into believing that birth is necessarily dangerous and painful. What we believe in is what we get. HypnoBirthing® wakes you up to those (previously unquestioned) beliefs, which work against you during your labor and birthing, and gives you proven, effective techniques to stay calm and comfortable on the day your baby is born.
“Both James and I were really inspired by your classes. Everything was so much more relaxed than I’d ever imagined, and although we weren’t doing the HypoBirthing exercises throughout, they helped a lot when I got anxious in the early phases. Also we’d practised them throughout the pregnancy, and that contributed to fundamentally changing me into a far more relaxed person generally! The midwives present were really impressed at how both James and I handled the birth experience, and although I know we were lucky not to have any special circumstances, I’m sure our positive outlook helped to influence that in part. In fact I’ve been so inspired by the effect that the hypnosis techniques have had on me that I’m now going to train to be a clinical hypnotherapist! So thank you so so much again.” – Ellie, mother of Luca
